  • Death to the freedom of the press

    In journalism school, we were taught about the history of the press and how truly patriotic it was to be a part of the historic institution of the press.

    They made sure we knew how sacred sources were and that the media, more than any other industry, would hold thebkeys to informing the public of what is happening in government.

    In the beginning, people saw the press as the watch dog, which would guard the public interest and expose wrongdoing through great investigative journalism.

    James and Ben Franklin championed this idea in colonial America and even went to jail over their writing content. According to google: “the Franklin brothers’ actions and writings set the stage for a greater understanding and appreciation of the importance of freedom of the press. Benjamin Franklin’s contributions to the printing and publishing industry, as well as his writings and political activities, helped shape the development of a free and informed citizenry.”

    Ben Franklin said, “Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government.” He would also argue that without freedom of speech and press, the constitution dissolves.

    Fast forward to 2025, and with the second term of Donald Trump, we see the deterioration of the free press. Covering the White House without being able to question anything is a problem. The days of journalists going to jail for their beliefs are over. The Republicans are just as afraid of Trump and won’t say anything about it, and the Democrats only get involved if it causes mass protests.

    For example, there should be mass protests for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who is the Maryland man deported to El Salvador without due process. No mass protests, so no objections from Democrats.

    On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis, and the world protested, and the Dems jumped right on the bandwagon. As of today, most of the reform gains we saw in the aftermath of Floyd’s murder have been squashed by the Trump administration. Again, no protest equals silence from the Dems.

    With the influence of the press being gutted, the Trump Administration can do whatever they want while we watch. We can now lay to rest our press.

  • Our political parties have failed us completely

    Next month, our Supreme Court will hear arguments as to whether former president Donald Trump is eligible to run for president given the 91 charges he is facing. The people are confused as to what is really happening because Trump is claiming he is immune from wrongdoing and that the charges are not valid.

    There would have been a time in our recent history that the Republican party would select a more presidential candidate. George Santos was booted out of Congress for all the lying and cheating he has done. How is Trump different?

    Would Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush approve of such a candidate like Trump? Further, with the danger of election interference by Russia and Trump facing a ton of debt, are we not taking a chance with him being vulnerable to more corruption because of his debt?

    Then there is current president Joe Biden. He might as well be 300 years old because, for some reason, despite the level of stress that comes with the job, would any former president agree with Biden continuing in this role? It is hard to believe that Bill Clinton and Barak Obama would agree that Joe is ready for another term. We know that both parties could support better candidates. But at this point, they can not be trusted.

    The two-party system does not work for this reason. They have lost the trust of the people, and that is probably the only thing that can be agreed on.

    So what is the country to do? This clear, good Ole Boy network in politics has betrayed us. The parties have lost sight of what the people really want. The majority of the people are tired of seeing money by the billions sent overseas, and we have millions of struggling people here.

    We are tired of wars and being involved in wars. We are tired of our government taking care of everyone else by us.

    Solution: All three branches of government need to be replaced. One huge election and nobody over 70 should be allowed to take any position. Our smartest and brightest people are between 40 and 60 years old, and we need to tap into that market. We need to have a greater balance of medical professionals, former teachers, business executives, and blue-collar workers in Congress. We should maintain a third of each. We need to pledge to take care of home first and settle our own issues so that we can reach out together as a country to help others, but not until we are good at home. Finally, we need to be as diverse as the U.N. white people should not dominate the branches. We need to embrace diversity and build a country that works for everyone and not just some.

  • Appropriate: Building character even when only God is watching

    There was a recent journalist who shared her sexual harassment story in a new podcast. This was the first time she had spoken openly about it, and even after a few years, she was still shaken by the events that happened.

    She did not say exactly what hurt worse, but the person who did this to her was a trusted colleague, and she never saw it coming. He made references to her private parts, and, to me, it appeared he was “shooting his shot” with her.

    She is a beautiful woman who has always displayed a professional demeanor and definitely not the type to invite such behavior. She ultimately left her job over this and never reported his inappropriate behavior.

    We live in a country of blurred lines. Private things should remain private and likewise for things public. When you blur the lines, it supports inappropriateness.

    For men specifically, we need to develop an inner governor that safeguards us from inappropriate behavior. We need to be able to halt this behavior during the thought process. This way, the actual corresponding behavior never comes to pass.

    This is a moral issue. Whatsoever a man thinks in his heart, so is he. If we surround ourselves with the wrong things and we allow for negative energy to remain in our inner spaces, we are doomed to fail.

    Some of Donald Trumps comments regarding women come from a sense of entitlement and having the power and wealth to, for the most part, do what you want to do.

    It is for men to protect our women by maintaining appropriate behavior at all times. It is difficult to write this without sounding too preachy, but we need a stronger all-out effort to make our society as safe a possible k e for our women and children.
