  • So what’s with the Pope?

On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States became the 267th pope for more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.

These are exciting times for Catholics as some would still be mourning the death of the previous pope. But the fact that a new pope was selected so fast has to be comforting.

I am not Catholic, and I often wonder how other religions interpret scripture, which leads to roles like this. Most Catholics in the know believe that Peter (yeah, the one that denied Christ and swears) was the first pope. Now they didn’t just deem him that. The scripture in Matthew 16 has been interpreted by them to give Peter “special authority” from God over the rest of the Apostles particularly in the phrase, “whatever you bound on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Since it was actually God who selected Peter from the rest to do this task is significant to them. The same logic applies to Mary because it is said in Luke’s gospel that God gave her favor over all other women to birth his son.

On the outside, this seems logical because we can definitely prove that God did select Mary and Peter in these cases, and if God never selected another person for anything else, they would have a real good argument.

However, God selected many people for special tasks and circumstances, and when you look at those selected, you do see a pattern. Simply put, God possesses this thing called for e knowledge which allows him to know things before they happen. It’s one of several things that separate him from other wannabe gods.

Satan does not have this ability. So since God alone has this ability and with it, now we know how easily he can get his will done. Imagine being one of 100 people trapped in an enclosed pool area with the water rising 10 feet. In that moment, God knows what everyone had for breakfast, who has to use the bathroom, everyone’s credit score, and he knows all the good swimmers. And, of course, he knows all the people who will make it out of this tragedy. And he knew this information 10k years ago.

If God had to send a message out from this crowd, he would already know who to use for that, and he would have known this more than 10k years ago.

What’s the point? God selects people based on getting his will done. He selected Abraham because he knew what Abraham would do in the future (Gen. 18:18-19). He knew what Noah would do. He knew Esau would be profane and that Jacob, despite his flaws, would get the job done. David was God’s pick to be king as was Solomon despite David’s other sons. God selected every prophet from Moses to John the Baptist because of foreknowledge.

Now, you probably can guess why Peter and Mary were selected, right?

What does this mean for the Catholic Church? Nothing, they are free in this country to do what they want to do. There is a reason words like “pope” and “papacy” are not biblical words. There is a reason why Christ was raised from the death with all authority, and the scriptures never said he shared that authority with anybody.

We should not put our trust in men — ever (Psalms 146:3). And we should always look to the almighty God for our understanding. There was never a need for many to try and start something God died for in his word. Follow Jesus!

  • Religious beliefs are the biggest trick on Halloween

Halloween is more than 2000 years old. It is something that immigrants helped to develop in this country. Halloween has everything to do with the Celtic celebration of old, where they welcomed the harvest at the end of summer by dressing up in costumes to wart off ghosts and celebrate the occasion. It was always festive and always fun.

Like everything else, religion tends to put a damper on many things as some attempt to make others feel extra guilt about their sins. There are some who believe almost everything is bad, and for them, religion has everything to do with stopping people from going too far.

For the sake of religion, there was a time in this country where women who were believed to be witches or practice witchcraft were burned alive. Somehow, these religious nuts only see the downside to everything, and if we follow their teaching, we would not be allowed to do anything.

Biblically speaking, the bible does prohibit any practice of witchcraft or worship of anything other than the Almighty God. I am sure there is a small percentage of Halloweeners who have gone too far into the festivities and use it as a time to practice evil. But that is definitely not the majority.

My 3 year old granddaughter loves to play dress up. In fact, when her mom was that age and older, we bought her many beautiful dolls to play with. Kids today like to dress like the dolls. My grandbaby doesn’t have one Disney princess doll, but she has all the Disney princesses gowns — all of them!

She loves Spiderman, and she has several spidey costumes. She knows exactly what Halloween is, and she loves to dress up and get candy. It’s her third favorite holiday behind Christmas and her birthday!

My point is that if you are one of those super duper Christians that complains every year about Halloween and you are the only house on your block with the porch light off during tricks or treats, I need you to know that you are sending a message but it is not the one you want to send. You will never be able to convince anyone of your beliefs by going so far against the grain.

This year, 175 million people will celebrate Halloween. For a change, why don’t you join them?

  • Liberty and justice for all?

President Barack Obama’s endorsement of a controversial plan to build a mosque just blocks from Ground Zero has fueled raging debates over religious freedom and sensitivities over the 9/11 attacks.

One of the many things about President Obama’s presidency that bothers me is the fact that Christians I know keep circulating propaganda that says Obama is not a US citizen. Furthermore, there is an email – I call it a hate email – that talks about Muslims out-numbering and taking over America. This is also being circulated by so-called Christians.

I’m reminded of a quote by Gandhi: ‎”I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ … ”

    How true, how true!

I’d like to think that America is home to some of the smartest people in the world. I’d also like to believe that given the facts, we, as a people, would allow for our opinions to be trumped. It’s sad that I can’t believe or think these things.

How can we be “One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” and fight against the building of a mosque near Ground Zero?

I guess the same way James Carter and R’heem Turner could get beaten unconscious in Atlanta in 2006 for being gay (not to slight thousands of others); or the same way Emmett Till was murdered in 1955 (not to slight millions of others).

It doesn’t matter the target or the place. There’s just always a, “we don’t want _____ in our or near our _______” in America. We don’t want Jews in our neighborhoods! We don’t want Blacks in our schools! We don’t want foreigners in our factories! We don’t want gays near our children! And now, we don’t want a mosque near Ground Zero!

What’s worse is that there are some who think that protesting the building of a mosque near Ground Zero is a religious stand. This is the truest insult to all of the first century Christians that were persecuted for the cause of Christ.

This is not a religious stand at all.

Religion in this instance is a cover up to mask the hatred and prejudice toward Muslims!

Let me give some sobering words here: All Muslims are not violent and waiting for an opportunity to blow us up. Just like all Blacks are not criminals and waiting to steal from you. Nor is it true that all Whites are racist and looking for a chance to discriminate against you – although these statements are true for a small minority in each group.

It is true that in all races there are people who hate and are looking for ways to harm other people. It is true that all races have criminal intenders who plot to take what doesn’t belong to them. And it is equally true that all races suffer from bigotry and hatred.

Every one of us needs to examine what “liberty and justice for all” means.

Originally, many of the framers of the U.S. Constitution agreed to these words – while still owning slaves. They didn’t sign the documents and run right home and free their slaves.

But over the years, these words could have been changed, but they were not. “All” could have been changed to “some” because, unfortunately since this country’s beginning, it’s been interpreted that way.
